One earns, one cares for the family: what should we discuss?

“I will provide” does not explain what happens to the person leaving paid work for several years. Both partners need this conversation.

The hard question

If one person reduces paid work for family care, how should we discuss protection?

Family care has financial consequences

Discuss changes to income, savings, and the ability to return to paid work. Do not assume men and women have identical roles: either person may take on more care.

Consider duration, family needs, and available help. This questionnaire does not value unpaid labor.

Daily budgeting and legal protection are different

Discuss personal spending money, household access, and paying for independent advice now. A promise in notes is not a legal entitlement to property or support.

Florida §61.079 permits property and spousal-support provisions subject to limits. Counsel should assess which mechanisms fit your situation and whether terms can be enforced.

Do not replace security with control

Financial support does not entitle someone to sexual access, a waiver of safety, or preventing the other person from seeking help. A document should not punish disagreement.

Each person can describe what they need to make decisions about work and care freely. Do not present those wishes as already agreed.

Preferences for legal review

Record possible arrangements in your own words and take them to your own lawyers. Do not use an unreviewed compensation formula.

  • Personal savings during a career break
  • Access to money and housing
  • Training and a return to paid work
  • Revisiting plans when care responsibilities change
